Cornell Alumni Outing – the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre Tour

The Cloud Gate Dance Theatre Main Entrance (No. 36, Lane 6, Zhong-Zheng Road Sec 1, Danshui District, New Taipei City)

Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China. In 1973, choreographer LIN Hwai-min adopted this classical name and founded the first contemporary dance company in the greater Chinese-speaking community. Cloud Gate dancers receive training in meditation; Qi Gong, an ancient breathing exercise; internal martial arts; modern dance; and ballet. Manifesting in choreographies, the company transforms ancient aesthetics into a thrilling and modern celebration of motion. Cloud Gate has toured worldwide with frequent engagements at major art and music festivals in the world. They are well acclaimed as “Asia’s leading contemporary dance theater” (The Times), and “One of the best dance companies in the world” (FAZ).

After its warehouse studio was destroyed in a blaze in 2008, Cloud Gate signed a B.O.T. contract with the New Taipei City government for a 40-year operating right to use the public land, on condition that Cloud Gate provided its own funds for building and running the theater on the site. 4,155 individual and corporate donations, including a gift of US$ 5 million from the Alphawood Foundation Chicago, had made the construction of the Theater possible. It was opened for performance in 2015 April 24. Since then, Cloud Gate Theater has become a popular cultural hub of northern Taiwan. In 2017, Cloud Gate Theater won the first prize of the prestigious Far Eastern Architectural Design Award.

The tour will be conducted with an extension option. The first part of the tour guides us into understanding the founding history of the Cloud Gate. The second part guides us into experiencing our bodies in the way our bodies breathe. The dancers will demonstrate how to relax and extend our limbs and torsos through the way of TaiQi. This is an unique opportunity to learn this art in a deeper sense. However, the option to join only the first part of the tour remains a viable option.
